don't look for it, you've found it
2007-02-07 - 10:20 p.m.

So I got a job in Portland. I'm an attendant at a residence for quadriplegics. A friend helped me get it. I never would have applied otherwise, since you supposedly need a CNA card (I don't even know what that is) or a lot of experience. But the interviewer was really nice and said they'll just give me some extra training. I start tomorrow. I work from 3-11 every day but I'm not sure how many days I'll get at first.

My job history is so bizarre, it's hard to fill out applications, but for my last job (petitioning in California, 03-06) I listed Eileen as my reference, this awesome lady Brian and I worked for. She owns a petitioning company in Sacramento. Right after the interview I called her to make sure she remembered me, and she was so excited to hear from me, and we worked out everything she would say about me to help me get the job. That made me happy...

It pays $9.25 an hour and if I stay there for 90 days I get health, dental, and eye insurance! If that happens it will be the first time I've been insured since 2004. Who knows, they might hate me or I might hate the job or something. It seems like whenever anything is certain in my life, it isn't really certain.

I hope those of you who I was expecting to see and/or live with in Oakland aren't annoyed that I changed my plans. What can I say, I'm addicted to Donna. Even though her apartment is basically a giant litter box for the 16 psychotic cats and kittens who live here, and all my boxes of books are still in my car because there's nowhere to put them... we're going to work something out.

I think I set a personal job-search record -- I found a job a week after arriving here, and only 24 hours after I actually started looking. Especially for Portland, that amazes me.

I have this strange desire to become a nurse -- I have for several years at least -- so I figured this job will help me decide if I actually like it or not. I'm just glad to find something other than political canvassing or working at a cafe or making coffee.

So of course we went shopping to celebrate, but I didn't buy any of the pretty dresses I tried on, only a pair of sensible black pants for work, and a beautiful sweater. We usually drink a bunch of coffee and run around stores acting like idiots and laughing too loud.

Now I need to hem the pants because I am short and everything is always too long for me... all the kittens in this room are sleeping so it would also be a good time to organize my clothes without having them chase me around the whole time. You have no idea how intense kitten love is.

If you want to see a bunch of random photos of Donna and me, check out my flickr page. And you should also listen to the song on my myspace profile, it's by the Mountain Goats and it's fucking hilarious.

love - becky
